High Court
The High Court is one of Ireland’s most important courts. It can hear almost any civil or criminal case, with no limits on the amount of compensation it can award. It decides on the validity of laws, reviews decisions of lower courts, tribunals, and certain public bodies, and hears appeals from the Circuit Court in civil cases. In some civil cases, such as defamation, assault, or false imprisonment, a jury may be involved. The High Court also deals with judicial reviews, legal questions sent from the District Court, and cases involving significant claims for damages.
