Asking to be excused from jury service
Who can be called for jury service
If you are an Irish citizen aged 18 or over and your name is on the Register of Electors for Dáil Éireann (opens in new tab), you may be called for jury service. Some people cannot serve — they are either not eligible or disqualified.
Not eligible
You are not eligible if your job is closely connected to the justice system. This includes:
- Judges, coroners, the Attorney General and their staff
- The Director of Public Prosecutions and their staff
- Members of An Garda Síochána (police)
- Practising barristers, solicitors, legal staff, and Courts Service employees
- Prison officers, prison staff, and prison visiting committee members
- Probation and welfare service employees
- Forensic laboratory staff
- Serving members of the Defence Forces (including the Army Nursing Service and the Reserve Defence Force while on paid duty)
- President of Ireland (Uachtarán na hÉireann)
